Information for patients » How to use
What are the highest utilizable doses of systemic enzyme therapy drugs?
Enzyme molecules are absorbed from the intestine by special transport mechanisms. This function of intestinal cells is highly depending on particular factors and on the current status of the digestive tract in each body. The package leaflet of each preparation provides information on the recommended dosage. The maximum utilizable dose is 3 x 10 coated tablets daily for Wobenzym and 3 x 4 tablets daily for Phlogenzym. Overdose with enzyme drugs intended for systemic enzyme therapy is practically impossible. An excessive dose may lead to adverse effects in the form of digestive problems (flatulence, epigastralgia) and diarrhea, which disappear as soon as the dosage is reduced. Unabsorbed enzymes are excreted from the body.

How long can systemic enzyme therapy drugs be taken for?
No adverse effects have been observed even when higher doses of enzyme preparations were administered for a long time. Occasionally, temporary aggravation of symptoms may occur at the beginning of treatment with Wobenzym or Phlogenzym in chronic diseases, which, based on current experience, such a transient aggravation is regarded as a positive reaction of the body to the therapy in most cases. In such an event, administration of the drug should not be discontinued but a possible temporary reduction in dosage should be considered.

How are systemic enzyme therapy drugs administered?
The tablets need to be swallowed, without chewing, on an empty stomach, i.e. at least 30 minutes before the next meal or at least 2 hours after the last meal and rinsed down with plenty of liquid (at least 250 ml).

May systemic enzyme therapy drugs be used by children?
The enzyme preparations may be given to children after a consultation with a physician who will prescribe the dosage.

Special precaution

The symptoms of chronic illness may occasionally increase in severity at the beginning of Wobenzym and Phlogenzym therapy (most often during second week of treatment). Based on current experience this is considered in most cases a positive reaction of the organism on the treatment. In this case the medication should not be discontinued, although a temporary reduction in dose might be advisable.
