Summary

In the treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases, hydrolytic enzymes have so far been used as supplementary therapy. Their administration is theoretically justified by their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and immunomodulatory effect. Of the nosological units in which we have used this therapy sucessfully resistant forms of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Sjögren's syndrome have to be mentioned. The role of hydrolytic enzymes in the therapy of rheumatic diseases can only be estab1ished by performing target-oriented trials involving simultaneous study of immunological parameters. In the light of our experience, this form of therapy has proved beneficial as a supplementary mode of treatment.

Key words: hydrolytic enzymes, therapy of intlammatory rheumatic diseases.
