Which diseases can be treated by systemic enzyme therapy drugs ?

Naturally, a brief information material cannot list the entire range of diseases involving an inflammation, swelling or immunity disorder and, therefore, all of the situations where treatment with systemic enzyme therapy drugs can be recommended can not be mentioned. Please, read the package leaflet information carefully before you begin treatment. Consult any possible adverse effects with your physician or pharmacist.

Here you can find indications for Wobenzym, Phlogenzym and Wobe-Mugos approved by Czech regulatory authorities and therefore valid for the Czech Republic:

Inflammation in the area of the nose, throat, ears, upper and lower respiratory tract

These are very frequent diseases, especially in childhood, although adults are often not avoided. Inflammation in this region has often tendency to recur and it also may enter the chronic stage. Stronger disposition for sinusitis is described in people with impaired immunity or with slight anatomical deviation in the nasal cavity area. Painful punctures and application of antibiotics are often necessary for the treatment of sinusitis. Inflammation of the middle ear is an equally unpleasant disease. If often repeated it may lead to impaired hearing.

In all such diseases systemic enzyme therapy drugs act beneficially against the swelling of mucosal membranes, they improve the draining and transport of mucus. In bronchitis, enzyme therapy decreases the viscosity of the phlegm, which is making it easier to expectorate. In all the mentioned cases enzyme treatment helps optimize the inflammatory process by increasing the concentration of antibiotics in tissues and improving general immunity response.

Dosage:

For inflammations in the area of the ears, nose, throat and upper and lower respiratory tract Wobenzym in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 5 coated tablets (a higher dose is preferred at the beginning of treatment), or Phlogenzym in the dose of 3 x 2 tablets, are administered daily until the symptoms subside. In severely progressing diseases or at the beginning of treatment of an acute inflammation Phlogenzym may be taken in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets daily.

Neither Wobenzym nor Phlogenzym substitute treatment with antibiotics where indicated, but both of the drugs enhance the efficacy of antibiotics.

Urological and andrological diseases (diseases of the urinary tract and of male genitals)

Systemic enzyme therapy drugs are used in the treatment of urinary tract inflammations whose frequency of occurrence ranks them closely behind respiratory tract inflammations.

Even relatively young men, around forty years of age, may have problems with prostate exuberance and inflammations. Prostate inflammation often becomes chronic, accompanied by a number of complaints (e.g. painful urination, pain and pressure behind the pubis, troubles in sexual life, etc.). Treatment with systemic enzyme therapy drugs (combination with antibiotics when indicated by the character of the disease is possible) supports curing or significant elimination of complaints.

Dosage:

For inflammations of the urinary tract and prostate Wobenzym in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 5 coated tablets, or Phlogenzym in the dose of 3 x 2 tablets, are administered daily until the symptoms subside. In severely progressing diseases or at the beginning of treatment of an acute inflammation Phlogenzym may be taken in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets daily. A higher dose is preferred at the beginning of treatment. Neither Wobenzym nor Phlogenzym substitute treatment with antibiotics in inflammatory diseases but enhance its efficacy.

Gynecological diseases (diseases of female genitals)

Inflammation is the most frequent complaint woman comes to see a gynecologist with. This may include inflammations of both external (vagina) and internal genitals (fallopian tubes, ovaries and the uterus). The incidences of chronic inflammations with all their consequences – chronic pain, adhesions and infertility – have been on an increase lately. The combination of systemic enzyme therapy drugs with antibiotics significantly increases the efficacy of treatment of such inflammations.

Painful breasts combined with tumefaction and induration in the mammary gland trouble many women. Such complaints often aggravate before menstruation. This often involves dysplastic changes in the mammary gland conditioned by a hormonal imbalance – the so-called fibrocystic mastopathy marked by the occurrence of cysts and accumulation of fibrotic connective tissue in the mammary gland. If, following a complex examination, a specialist confirms this diagnosis; treatment with enzyme preparations is suitable. The success of this treatment has been confirmed by controlled clinical trials. Self-examination of breasts twice a month and regular check-ups at a mammological center are, of course, a matter of usual practice.

Dosage:

For inflammations in the area of female genitals Wobenzym in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 5 coated tablets (a higher dose is preferred at the beginning of treatment), or Phlogenzym in the dose of 3 x 2 tablets, are administered daily until the symptoms subside. In severely progressing diseases or at the beginning of treatment of an acute inflammation Phlogenzym may be taken in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets daily.

Neither Wobenzym nor Phlogenzym substitute treatment with antibiotics in inflammatory diseases but enhance its efficacy.

For fibrocystic mastopathy 2 x 10 or 3 x 7 coated tablets of Wobenzym are administered daily for a minimum period of 6 weeks. It is necessary to consult your attending physician before you begin treatment!

Vascular diseases

Apart from the ability to optimize the course of an inflammation and reduce swelling systemic enzyme therapy drugs have a positive effect on some of the blood properties (e.g. they increase blood fluidity, reduce aggregation of erythrocytes and thrombocytes). All these factors act beneficially in the treatment of various vascular diseases. They are not only used as part of treatment of acute phlebitis, they also help patients after repeated phlebitis with lingering complaints – especially swellings and pain in the limbs during increased strain – which reduce their performance.

When lymph vessels are affected and lymphedema develops, Wobenzym is a significant component of the treatment.

Dosage:

Phlebitis affecting surface veins – Wobenzym in the dose of 3 x 5 to 3 x 7 coated tablets for a period of 2 – 3 weeks is recommended. Phlogenzym in the dose of 3 x 2 to 3 x 3-4 coated tablets daily can also be taken. Systemic enzyme therapy drugs can also be administered together with tablets for the adjustment of blood coagulation ability but a consultation with a physician is necessary.

Post-thrombotic syndrome – 3 x 5 to 3 x 10 coated tablets of Wobenzym for a period of 5 – 6 weeks. Higher doses are recommended at the beginning of treatment.

Lymph swelling (lymphedema)

Lymphedema occurs when the lymph tract is impaired, for example by recurring inflammations (phlebitis in the lower extremities, erysipelas, etc.), after an operation or irradiation (e.g. lymphedema in the upper extremity following the treatment of breast carcinoma). Lymph vessels infliction may also be inborn. Lymph circulation is impaired in the inflicted area, lymph vessels get clogged and lymph accumulates in tissues; proteins leak in the intercellular space, ”dragging along” additional liquid. Subsequently, inflammatory changes occur. An escalated lymphedema may significantly reduce function of affected extremity. Unlike other drugs, which only improve the function of the venous system and slightly improve the passage of lymph through remaining lymph pathways, systemic enzyme therapy drugs restore the transport capacity of lymph vessels, remove undesired protein substances from the intercellular space and inhibit the inflammatory process. A combined treatment of lymphedema using Wobenzym and manual lymph drainage has recently proved its efficacy. The therapy of lymphedema should be started at an early stage since it offers the greatest chance of success.

Dosage:

The lymphedema treatment should be carried out on a long-term basis. Before it is started it is necessary to consult the attending physician. The starting dose is usually 2 x 10 or 3 x 7 coated tablets daily (for 4 – 5 weeks), followed by a reduced dose of 3 x 5 to 3 x 3 coated tablets daily (for a minimum period of 8 weeks).

Wobenzym indicated for lymphedema developing after surgery of malignity is partly covered by the Czech insurance companies.

Inflammation and pain in the joints, tendons and muscles

A degenerative join disease (arthrosis) occurs more frequently with growing age. Although artrosis mainly affects the bearing joints (knee, hip), the other joints are sometimes hiten too. Inflammatory activation of arthrosis is accompanied with several complaints, mainly with intensive pain, but also with the exudation and movement reduction of the affected joint. Following systemic enzyme therapy application, the symptoms of inflammation are attenuated, both quiescent and exertion soreness is significantly reduced, as well as morning stiffness.

In patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (progressive polyarthritis – a joint disease partly caused by impaired immunity – autoimmunity) systemic enzyme therapy drugs may also be included as part of treatment. They reduce swellings and pain in the joints and improve their overall mobility. Unlike other drugs, enzymes have practically no significant side effects. If included in the complex treatment, they may help to reduce the doses of other antirheumatic drugs.

Another frequent place where systemic enzyme therapy drugs are used are inflammations of the soft extraarticular tissues – tendons, muscles and other components of the locomotory apparatus (e.g. “tennis elbow”, “frozen” shoulder, inflammation of the Achilles tendon).

Dosage:

Inflammatory activation of arthrosis – 3 x 6 coated tablets of Wobenzym daily for a period of 5-6 weeks or 3 x 2 tablets of Phlogenzym daily. In severely progressing diseases or at the beginning of inflammation treatment Phlogenzym may be taken in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets daily.

Rheumatoid arthritis – 3 x 5 coated tablets of Wobenzym daily for a period of 5-6 months or 3 x 2 tablets of Phlogenzym daily for a period of 6-9 months.

Soft tissue rheumatism - 3 x 5 coated tablets of Wobenzym daily for a minimum period of 3-4 weeks or 3 x 2 tablets of Phlogenzym daily. In severely progressing diseases or at the beginning of inflammation treatment Phlogenzym may be taken in the dose of 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets daily.

Injuries, traumas and post-operative status

Injuries and traumas
Injuries and traumas of various severity are common in everyday life, as well as in leisure time sport activities and of course also in professional sports. They are regularly accompanied by swellings, inflammation and pain. In a case of trauma or injury, early administration of systemic enzyme therapy drugs accelerate the absorption of swellings, hematomas and bruises, the remission of inflammatory changes and consequently of the pain. This reduces the time necessary for healing, work and training disability to a half.

Intensive physical stress during demanding sport performance often leads to overexertion of tendons and muscles and to micro traumas of the locomotory apparatus. Systemic enzyme therapy drugs accelerate regeneration of the body. They promote blood circulation in muscles and improve the utilization of oxygen in tissues, facilitating the breakdown of undesired metabolites. When administered prophylactically, systemic enzyme therapy drugs reduce severity of possible impairment. The fact that Wobenzym and Phlogenzym have become a standard among the preventive and therapeutic part of medical care in a number of top athletes (e.g. Jan Železný, Tomáš Dvořák, Ludmila Formanová) is not coincidental. In untrained individuals the systemic enzyme therapy drugs help body to cope with the consequences of increased strain.

Dosage:

Post-traumatic status (bruising, sprain, dislocation, fractures) – it is recommended to begin the treatment as soon as possible, Phlogenzym is to be applied 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets. When the acute condition fades away the dose should be reduced to 3 x 2 tablets until the symptoms subside.A suitable dose of Wobenzym is 3 x 5 to 3 x 10 coated tablets of daily. A higher dosage is advised where rapid absorption of a swelling, hematoma or bruise is desired. Based on how fast the symptoms recede (7-10 days) the dose should be gradually reduced to 3 x 3 coated tablets daily and applied until the symptoms completely disappear.

This treatment of post-traumatic conditions does not substitute a proper medical examination and attendance.

Postoperative status

Even the smallest surgical intervention – e.g. tooth extraction – is also a “trauma” to which the body responds by a swelling, pain and inflammation. Even in this case systemic enzyme therapy reduces the period of complaints, expedites healing and lowers the risk of complications. By the way, in plastic surgeries successful and quick healing guarantees a good cosmetic effect.

In case of planned surgery it is advised to administer systemic enzyme therapy drugs 2-3 days before the operation.

In any case, in more complicated surgeries it is always necessary to consult the administration of enzyme drugs with your attending physician!!!

Dosage:

Postoperative conditions - it is recommended to begin the treatment by Phlogenzym 3 x 3 to 3 x 4 tablets. Based on the condition the dose should be gradually reduced to 3 x 2 tablets until the symptoms subside.

A suitable dose of Wobenzym is 3 x 5 to 3 x 10 coated tablets of daily. A higher dosage is advised where rapid absorption of a swelling, hematoma or bruise is desired. Based on how fast the symptoms recede (7-10 days) the dose should be gradually reduced to 3 x 3 coated tablets daily and applied until the symptoms completely disappear.
